The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a standardized multiple-choice test administered by the United States Department of Defense. It is required for anyone who wants to enlist in any branch of the U.S. military — Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force.
The test serves two purposes: determining your eligibility for military service and helping identify which military jobs (MOS, ratings, AFSCs) you qualify for. It consists of 10 subtests that measure aptitudes in areas like math, science, mechanics, electronics, verbal comprehension, and more.
There are two versions: the CAT-ASVAB (computer-adaptive test) taken at a MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station), and the P&P-ASVAB (paper-and-pencil) administered at satellite MET sites. Most recruits take the CAT-ASVAB, which adapts question difficulty based on your performance.
Your AFQT Score
A percentile (1–99) derived from 4 of the 10 subtests: AR, MK, WK, and PC. This score determines whether you are eligible to enlist.
Your Line Scores
Combinations of different subtests that each branch uses to qualify specific jobs. Higher scores open more career options.
The Test Format
The CAT-ASVAB has ~145 scored questions across ~197 minutes. It is section-timed — you cannot go back to previous questions.
Four sections (marked ★) calculate your AFQT score. All 10 contribute to line scores for job qualification.
Arithmetic Reasoning
★ AFQTWord problems requiring mathematical reasoning — percentages, ratios, distance/rate/time, interest, and work-rate calculations.
Mathematics Knowledge
★ AFQTPure math concepts — algebra, geometry, and number theory. No word problems, just equations and formulas.
Word Knowledge

Paragraph Comprehension
★ AFQTReading comprehension — understand passages, identify main ideas, make inferences, and determine author intent.
General Science
Broad science knowledge from life science, earth science, chemistry, and physics.
Electronics Information
Electrical concepts, circuits, components, Ohm's Law, and basic electronics.
Auto Information
Automotive systems, engine components, fuel systems, and vehicle maintenance.
Shop Information
Tools, materials, fasteners, and workshop safety procedures.
Mechanical Comprehension

The AFQT Formula
Where VE (Verbal Expression) = WK + PC
Verbal skills are double-weighted. The raw score converts to a percentile (1-99) comparing you to a national reference population.

Each branch has a minimum AFQT score, but higher scores unlock more jobs and bonuses.
