The AFQT is the single number that determines your military eligibility. It comes from just four of the ten ASVAB subtests.
Your raw AFQT score is computed, then converted to a percentile (1–99) based on a nationally representative reference group.
AFQT = AR + MK + (2 × VE)
where VE (Verbal Expression) = WK + PC standard scores combined
Each subtest contributes to your final percentile. Click any to learn more and see example questions.
Your percentile places you in one of these categories, which determines your eligibility.
Category I (93–99)
Top tier — qualifies for nearly all jobs
Category II (65–92)
Competitive — most jobs available
Category IIIA (50–64)
Qualified — meets most branch minimums
Category IIIB (31–49)
Minimum — limited job options
Category IV (10–30)
Below standard — waivers may be needed
