Air Force BMT Packing List: What to Bring and How to Prepare
Prepare for Air Force BMT with guidance on required documents, clothing, phones, prescriptions, and restricted items, plus a practical departure checklist.
For Air Force Basic Military Training, start with the packing checklist linked from the official BMT preparation page. It identifies required documents and personal items, plus restrictions that are easy to miss when packing from memory.
Sources checked September 14, 2026. On that date, the Air Force preparation page linked a packing memorandum dated February 2, 2024. The date of our review does not make that memorandum a new 2026 edition. Compare it with your recruiter-issued instructions and any newer BMT guidance before shopping.
What to Bring to Air Force Basic Training
These are selected highlights from the official BMT packing memorandum. Read its complete required-item sections for your circumstances.
| Category | Items to review on the official list |
|---|---|
| Identity | Actual driver's license or state photo ID and Social Security card |
| Administration | Written contacts, completed visitor-access paperwork, and applicable spouse or Guard/Reserve documents |
| Money | Cash or a payment card for travel problems and initial expenses |
| Clothing | Weather-appropriate clothes; three pairs of plain dark blue or black spandex shorts; running shoes and one set of gym attire are recommended |
| Hygiene and vision | Permitted travel toiletries, applicable shaving supplies, glasses in a hard case, and a current prescription |
| Prescriptions | Current prescribed medicines in original labeled containers, with prescription documentation |
The memorandum specifies quantities, colors, and additional requirements. Use those details directly instead of guessing from this summary.
Phones, Smartwatches, and Prohibited Items
The memorandum specifically encourages a cellphone charger and active phone service, while prohibiting smartwatches and other unauthorized electronics. It also excludes aerosols, alcohol-containing products, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, food, and beverages. Permission to bring your phone does not mean unrestricted use. Check product labels while you are still at home. Put questionable items beside the bag and send your recruiter one clear list of product names. This is easier to resolve than describing an unidentified bottle at the airport.
If you take medication, discuss both the packing requirements and medical processing with your recruiter. Ask your clinician about treatment decisions; do not change a prescription based on an internet checklist.
Finish Visitor and Family Paperwork Early
Do not leave family arrangements until the night before you ship. The packing memorandum includes visitor-access documentation, and the BMT FAQ explains why dependent paperwork matters for processing pay and benefits. Packing memorandum, BMT FAQ.
An EnlistiQ preparation method:
- Ask your recruiter which forms apply to you and your expected visitors.
- Collect complete legal names and the requested details directly from the people involved.
- Check the form's signature instructions and complete all required fields.
- Resolve missing or inconsistent documents before departure.
- Explain that completing paperwork does not guarantee a visitor's admission or a fixed graduation date.
Keep personal information in your document folder, not in a group social-media post asking strangers to check it.
Prepare for the BMT Fitness Test You Will Actually Take
The official BMT FAQ, marked current as of September 2026, lists timed push-ups, sit-ups, a two-mile run, and waist-to-height ratio. It also identifies additional requirements for Special Warfare candidates. Use the BMT-specific guidance and recruiter instructions for the standards that apply to you. Current BMT PT FAQ.
Older preparation pages and general Air Force fitness discussions may refer to different events or distances. Before building a workout plan around a chart, check its date, audience, and test name.
Ask your recruiter or qualified trainer to review your technique and preparation schedule. If you have an injury, symptoms, or uncertainty about safe exercise, talk with a clinician. Avoid cramming weeks of preparation into a few hard sessions immediately before travel.
What to Study Before You Leave
The Air Force's preparation resources include reporting procedures, Air Force core values, the Airman's Creed, and drill fundamentals. Use the current materials your recruiter assigns. Official BMT preparation resources.
Try this short EnlistiQ routine:
- Read one small section of assigned material.
- Close it and explain or recite the information.
- Compare your answer with the source and mark errors.
- Review yesterday's errors before adding something new.
- Practice being ready on time with all needed materials.

Prepare for Limited Communication
The BMT FAQ permits letters and appropriate photos, discourages unnecessary care packages, and tells families not to send electronics or cameras. Your trainee-provided mailing details should guide correspondence. BMT mail FAQ.
Before shipping, give a trusted person an agreed list of responsibilities at home. Confirm your phone service will stay active if you are bringing it, and arrange bills so they do not require daily attention from you. Write down important numbers in case your device is unavailable.

Common Questions
Can I bring running shoes from home?
The linked memorandum recommends bringing running shoes. Confirm current requirements before buying, and choose an accepted pair you can comfortably use rather than saving an unfamiliar pair for arrival.
Should I use a 2016 packing PDF I found online?
Start from the current official preparation page and the list your recruiter supplies. An older PDF still being searchable does not make it the applicable edition.
Where can I practice the knowledge portion?
Open EnlistiQ Boot Camp Prep and select Air Force. Use the practice before departure alongside official materials. For other services, see our packing guides by branch.
