Marine Boot Camp Packing List: What to Bring and How to Prepare
Prepare for Marine Corps boot camp with a packing review for documents and essentials, guidance on restricted items, and a practical plan before shipping.
Bring your required documents and the small set of personal essentials approved by your Marine recruiter for your assigned depot. Preparing for recruit training means knowing your instructions, being ready for physical training, and having responsibilities at home settled before you travel.
This guide covers initial enlisted recruit training at Parris Island or San Diego. Sources checked September 14, 2026. We did not verify a current public item-by-item packing list that applies to every recruit at both depots. The review below helps you assemble and check your recruiter's list; it does not establish universal quantities or permissions.
Start With the Correct Reporting Packet
An official Marine Corps packing list can still be the wrong list for you. Officer Candidates School, the School of Infantry, and other courses publish requirements for people entering those specific programs. For example, SOI West's check-in instructions refer to uniforms and equipment already issued at the recruit depot.
Before using a list, identify:
- The course: initial enlisted recruit training.
- Your assigned depot and departure date.
- The edition your recruiter wants you to follow.
- Any additional instructions specific to your circumstances.
If the document tells you to pack equipment you have not been issued, check whether you are reading follow-on training instructions.
Documents and Essentials to Organize
Military OneSource identifies orders, identification, banking information, medical records, and applicable family documents as common basic-training paperwork. Confirm the exact items and required originals or copies with your Marine recruiter. Official general packing guidance.
| Category | Put this on your recruiter review list |
|---|---|
| Identification | Photo ID, Social Security card, and applicable citizenship or residency documents |
| Travel | All issued orders, shipping instructions, and travel paperwork |
| Banking | Direct-deposit details and the permitted payment method or cash amount |
| Medical | Required records, glasses or vision documentation, and prescribed-medication instructions |
| Family | Applicable marriage, divorce, dependent, and name-change documentation |
| Personal essentials | Approved travel clothing, underwear or sports bras, menstrual supplies, and hygiene items |
EnlistiQ packing method: hand-carry required documents in an organized folder. Check every item off against your actual packet, then inspect the bag rather than relying on memory.
For personal products, get specific. Ask whether your planned running shoes, razor, hair accessories, glasses, watch, phone, and charger are permitted, and whether they stay with you or go into storage. Do not assume that something accepted in another branch is accepted at your depot.
What to Leave Out
General official guidance excludes weapons, illegal drugs and paraphernalia, tobacco and vaping products, alcohol, gambling materials, and food. It also warns against expensive electronics and other valuables. Your depot's instructions determine the complete list and any specific exceptions. Military OneSource restrictions.
Do not buy a tactical starter kit, extra boots, uniforms, supplements, or entertainment devices just because a video recommends them. First identify the written requirement that makes the item necessary.
Prescription medicine needs an individual discussion with your recruiter about documentation, packaging, and medical processing. Do not stop treatment, conceal a medicine, or repackage it into an unidentified container to simplify your luggage. Ask your clinician about treatment decisions.
Prepare for the Initial Strength Test
The Marine Corps' enlistment guidance identifies the Initial Strength Test (IST) as pull-ups or push-ups, a plank, and a timed 1.5-mile run. Confirm the current standards and any program-specific requirements with your recruiter. Passing a practice session is not a substitute for an official evaluation. Ask for coaching on the events you actually need to improve. A useful training record shows the exercise, technique feedback, and how you felt afterward. It should help you and your recruiter adjust preparation, not pressure you to beat a personal best every day.
If you are inactive, injured, or unsure what exercise is appropriate, get qualified medical guidance before increasing your training. Avoid trying to recreate long loaded hikes or exhaustion-based challenges on your own.
Know What Recruit Training Will Teach You
The Marine Corps describes recruit training through phases of foundation, immersion, transformation, and transition. It develops discipline, physical readiness, military skills, and teamwork. Parris Island's public training page describes a 13-week schedule; individual timelines can change. Marine Corps training overview, Parris Island recruit training.
Your job before shipping is to become easier to teach:
- Listen completely. Let someone finish an instruction before acting.
- Use the assigned reference. Review the values, ranks, General Orders, and other knowledge your recruiter gives you.
- Practice recall. Cover a short section, produce the answer, then correct it against the source.
- Build consistent routines. Keep your space organized and finish tasks without repeated reminders.
- Ask about weak areas early. If water confidence or a fitness event concerns you, tell your recruiter while there is time to arrange appropriate help.
Do not use unsupervised water-survival drills, weapons practice, or sleep deprivation as preparation. Those activities do not reproduce the controlled instruction at a recruit depot.
Make a Family Communication Plan
Ask your recruiter what to expect about the arrival call, mailing address, phone storage, and emergency contact process. Write important numbers down so they are available without your phone.
For families, Parris Island directs people to obtain the recruit's platoon, company, and battalion information through the recruiter and its official mailing guidance. Follow the assigned depot's instructions rather than a copied address from another recruit. Parris Island family FAQ.
Arrange recurring bills, pet care, vehicle storage, and urgent responsibilities before departure. Choose one reliable person to coordinate updates if that makes communication easier for your family.
Final 72-Hour Checklist
- Recruiter confirms the current list for your assigned depot.
- Required originals and copies are present and names match.
- Meeting time, itinerary, and travel-delay instructions are clear.
- Every personal item has been checked against the list.
- Medication or eyewear questions have been resolved.
- Family knows how to get the correct address and emergency guidance.
- Relevant medical or personal changes have been reported.
Common Questions
Can I bring my phone to Marine boot camp?
Confirm your recruiter's travel instructions and the depot's current collection or storage process. Permission to carry a phone while traveling does not establish permission to use it in training.
Should I bring everything on a Marine OCS list?
No. Use the list for enlisted recruit training. Officer-candidate and follow-on-school requirements belong to different courses.
